The five numbers a business owner should see every Monday

Most dashboards show thirty metrics nobody acts on. The five that predict the month for almost any company under $30M.

A dashboard is not a report. It is a set of numbers that change what you do this week. For most owner-led companies, five numbers cover it.

  • Pipeline created this week and its value: the leading indicator of revenue in 30 to 90 days
  • Conversion rate from lead to customer, by source: tells you where quality is
  • Capacity utilisation: hours, chairs, crews or seats booked against available
  • Gross margin by job, product or service line: where the profit actually is
  • Cash position and 13-week forecast: whether growth is affordable

How to build it

Connect the CRM, the accounting system and the operations tool to one model. Define each number once, in writing. Put it in front of the leadership team in a 20-minute Monday meeting. Adjust the definitions for a month, then stop changing them. The dashboard becomes useful the week people start arguing about the numbers instead of ignoring them.
